The Wild Places

A river in Wyoming

Where are they? Have you been there? Do you know the way? Will you take me along? The high places where you can touch the sky, the low places below the surface of the seas, the lost places where no-one returns from with the same mind, The places that simply take your breath and steal away your thoughts of the present.

Where was the last wild place you went? I’m not talking about partying (unless it was truly wild) or drinking (done that). I mean those wild places where you almost don’t get there. The drive where you are looking down thousands of feet with barely room to squeeze up the trail. That trail that leads to the mountains or the deep dark forest to a lake or across the arid desert to a destination so irresistible that YOU MUST GO. That draw to the wild, lonely places that pull you along like the siren songs of lore.

Have you ever just stood on the bank of a stream and wondered when or if the last person was there and whose footsteps were you walking in? Was it a day ago or a century since the last person stood here? Was it some unnamed ancestor hunting with crude tools? Possibly Kit Carson, Hugh Glass or some unnamed Conquistador or Voyageur? Perhaps the only person to ever stand there was and is you?

Have you had a dream of that epic trip into the wilds and just haven’t done it yet? GO! NOW! Do not hesitate for the fates and fortune favor the bold and adventurous. Don’t put it off till you can’t go. I made a pilgrimage that was 40 years in the making a couple years ago, life got in the way for far too long before I made it to what felt like the top of the world (only 9600 feet but mystical and magical and sings to the soul), a pilgrimage that my father wanted to make and waited too long for.

These are places that are silent except to the soul and the inner ear and mind. They might not speak to everyone but draw YOU to them. Places that are there waiting for your discovery and enjoyment. Is the journey difficult and tasking or even a simple walk to your destination? It does not matter, the journey and the destination are what drives you to the discovery.

The location doesn’t matter, be it a fabled national Park, a local stream, the woods, or the top of the worlds highest peaks. They draw your sense of adventure and dreams, they make your soul sing, they thrill your bones and they wait for your discovery. Like a fine dining experience, they wait for you to taste of the rare air, the crystal drink they offer, the rare delight of the seeing, tasting, touching and understanding.
