Random musings

Another entry…..Just random ramblings….

The Beastie Boy keeps us safe travelling around this hectic city and I think E has come to see that he is not too unwieldy in this environment.  His size was one dissenting reason she gave for not bringing him on this trip.  Extra care needs to be taken in driving around town and in and out of parking spots, he is a big beast more suited to the country than urban life but we have had no problems in city or country.  It is interesting to hand his keys off to valet (which I have only done twice this trip), the look on their faces have been worth the extra tip I give them for handling a vehicle that’s generally twice as big as anything else in the lot.

We’ve been in Vegas a few days and have met up with old acquaintances and new favorites. These are twitter and YouTube folks whom we have met in the past.  Poker folks like @alaskagal1, @chrisabramski, and now @thetrooper97.  We’ve also met a number of new folks here.

And what do I say about our regular food haunts?  Bachi Burger, The King and I (Thai), Echo and Rigg (to celebrate our anniversary), Naked City Pizza (eclipse night fare).  We tried a new (to us) steakhouse, Oscars at the Plaza hotel, named for and run by longtime Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.  Now on our short list (two to be exact) of steak houses that cook a steak that rivals mine at home.

Mostly been playing poker and visiting our usual poker haunts, The Orleans, Harrahs, Red Rock, Green Valley, Golden Nugget, Binions, the LinQ and Planet Hollywood.

See my post about the Valley of Fire for some fun news about this trip.  We also decided that we should make sure we saw the Super Blood Moon Eclipse but the Vegas sky was clouded over.  We looked at the map and consulted the NOAA weather satellites and headed for the desert just east of Primm.  We got down there and of course pavement turned into dirt pretty quick (it’s still called Las Vegas Blvd) and we found a dry pan to park on, dropped the tailgate and watched the eclipse.  90 degrees and a cool breeze blowing.  It was still pretty cloudy but we managed to see most of the eclipse.  Left Primm and headed to the city, R.P. says she wants Naked City Pizza (@nakedcitylv on twitter) and I concurred, so we pointed The Beast to an auspiciously named bar called Moon Doggies where Naked City has their kitchen.  Walked in and ordered wings and the Guinea Pie (best white sauce pizza in town) and tried a new beer.  If in Vegas, you should do this bar and Naked City.  They have opened a pizza shop on Paradise but we just love the atmosphere at Moon Doggies.

I will miss the weather when we leave…we always do.  We both dread going back to the routine of jobs, bosses, weather, routines and the ho-hum day to day grind.  It’s not so much the casino based poker, we have card rooms at home that we love to play at.  It’s not the food (although there are fabulous places here), we have great restaurants at home.  It is a lot to do with the weather.  And I know it sounds strange, but our lives are less hectic when we are here.  Even with what seems like our hectic schedule of travel and hustling from place to place, we are not rushed or hectic.  We are relaxed in our non-standard, non routine method of going about what we like to do daily.  Yeah, I know, it’s always better when you are on vacation and each place has its downside.  Just saying though, I’d move to the southwest in a heartbeat if I could make the same money (ain’t happening).

Well, E has developed a head cold.  She is a compulsive hand washer and admonishes me all the time when she thinks I don’t wash mine enough.  Someone in a poker room passed on a cold to her.  Sometimes I think the hand washing gets out of hand…..gotta build up those immunities some way.  Anyway, stopped and got her night time cold pills which she just took and went to bed.  Gonna tuck her in and finish this up and head for bed in a bit.

Again, thanks for following along.
