The Rugo from Foxfury

the package

This is a review of the Foxfury RUGO lights.  If you just want the specs, scroll down.

These lights are designed to be used for photography.  They are designed to be attached to most cameras and include a mount for action cameras.  I ordered mine with the optional mounts designed to attach to handle bars or the legs of  a number of drones.  My purpose for the lights is to use them on my DJI Inspire 1.

My initial contact with the Foxfury company was at the Interdrone 2018 conference.  I met the owner, Maria Cugini at the night operations training given by Sundance Media Group.  They use the RUGO lights extensively and I was able to operate their drones at night using the lights.  Douglas Spotted Eagle from Sundance actually took the lights off the drone and threw them across the room at one point during his presentation to show the durability of the lights.

I got home and immediately placed my order for 2 of the lights and the mounts for my drone.  I fly the DJI Inspire 1 and Maria markets a “handlebar” mount which also fits most drone landing gear with round gear or frame parts that the round mount will fit.  This mount is very robust and is easy to mount and dismount from both the drone and the light.

The package arrived well packed in a box with bubble wrap surrounding it.  Inside were the two boxes containing my lights and the drone mounts.  All the items were professionally packaged and there was no damage to any of the contents.  The RUGO comes with a standard, four intensity “yellow” light battery and a three position lens.  It comes with a 1/4-20 and a cold shoe mount attached for affixing to your DSLR or the handlebar mount. There is a very comprehensive, easily understood “quick start” guide that will have you operating the light in seconds.  Also in the package is an adapter for mounting to an action cam.  I also ordered the “orange” battery which includes the flashing mode which is required by the FAA for night operations.

I unpackaged the lights with glee and immediately found that all the batteries came with a charge.  This enabled me to satisfy my “right now” personality and I took them into a dark room to give them a try.

They lit up my dark room very well.

I am still waiting for my night waiver from the FAA so I have not been able to fly outdoors in full darkness with these great lights.

I definitely have found these lights to be exactly as advertised and they have lived up to the reputation that precedes them.

If you get the opportunity to chat with the staff of FoxFury at any of the trade shows or over the phone, just do it.  They are very personable and knowledgeable.  I received some of the best customer service from any company I have ever had dealings with and highly recommend this company.

BFD, just droning on…
