Nevada the Battle Born State outside the casinos

Have you been here to Las Vegas, Nevada? I qualify that because there is a Las Vegas, New Mexico where gambling and big city lights don’t exist.

There’s the lights, the famous neon and the “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas attitude” as well as the Casinos and world famous food. These things are what draws most people to this seemingly desolate piece of the American Southwest. Few visitors ever get beyond “the strip” or downtown on Fremont street. They don’t look beyond the glitz and glamour of the city and the casinos. This may come as a surprise, but there is an entire world of discovery and adventure beyond the metro area. Over the next few posts, I hope to introduce you to the other parts of Clark county and Nevada. Venturing into the desert southwest on my trusty war pony Harry and seeing the sights beyond the city where sometimes only the adventurous (sometimes foolhardy) ever explore. I wamt to introduce you, my readers to the life beyond what you probably think of when someone says Las Vegas.

An intoduction to our journey: Harry is the name of my trusty steel steed and war pony. He is a 1997 Jeep TJ in forest green. I named him for the companion lizard in the british tv show, “Death in Paradise”. He is a member of the first year of coil springs on Jeeps, has a 4 inch lift, 4.56 gears and rides on 33 inch tires. under the hood is a 4.0l six cylinder power plant and an auto (best, in my opinion, for rock crawling) tranny.

Harry and I in our new habitat. The southern Nevada desert is often arid and hot but dressing appropriately is nescessary for both of us.

Nevada, the Battle Born State, was admitted to the union on October 31, 1864. The reason for “battle born” is that we are the only state admitted during the Civil War. Our nickname is actually the Silver State, due to the amount of Silver ore that was mined here in the Comstock and other mines. We will explore mines in future episodes. There are thousands of miles of Public lands in Nevada. WE have the largest amount of Public lands in the lower 48 states with over 80% of the state being managed by federal agencies. If you are unfamiliar with those federal agencies, the following images are their logos and will be found on even their trail signs. There are some abreviations that will be used, so I will explain them here: USFS=U.S. Forest Service, BLM=Bureau of Land Management, USFWS=Fish and Wildlife. There are other agencies like the Department of Defense and state agencies which I will add to later posts

As we travel thoughout Nevada, we will visit towns, ghost towns, mines, recreation areas and just generally explore The Silver State. So, come along for the ride (quite literally) and I hope you enjoy our expeditions into the outback of Nevada and our surrounding areas. We will not be actually exploring Las Vegas as we leave that to our sister site flynnandollie.com.

If you see Harry and I out there, let us know and stop to chat, we are always looking for good conversation and places to go see.
